Sedation Dentist - Who's this new Guy on the Block?
Everyone will agree when I say that there is no experience that can match the experience of a dentist's chair. The sound of the drill inside your head, the sight of the needle coming closer and closer to you and heading for your gums, the painful tingling felt on sucking in air etc are all involved in making a visit to the dentist something that most people avoid or at least try their best to avoid.
You probably find excuses to not make it for your dental appointment. You tell yourself that your teeth are in perfect condition and you don't need a dentist. And if there was a situation where you can't avoid going to the dentist, you don't sleep the night before wondering and fearing the pain and trauma. Sound familiar? A million people in the world will find this description familiar. There are a lot of people who are afraid of going to the dentist.
But there is a new concept in town, one that is changing the entire concept of dentistry. Today, it's all about the sedation dentist.
Doesn't that sound like fiction to you? But rest assured, it's a very real concept. Sedation dentists are the way to go now when choosing oral health care professionals.
You may wonder what sedation dentists do that is helpful to you and your fear. It's really quite simple. Sedation dentists first acquaint their patients with the entire procedure and make sure that they are eligible for sedation. This involves the patients not being alcoholics, on any other medication or drugs, pregnant or nursing etc. The sedation dentist chooses how to sedate the patient depending on the facilities available and skills of the staff. Sedation can be done in any of three ways. It can be done through IV. Though, as this involves needles and extensive training, it's not often used. Sedation dentists prefer sedating their patients either orally or through inhalation.
By sedating their patients, sedation dentists are able to perform complicated and lengthy dental procedures, which would take several sessions, in one session. All the time the patient is comfortably drowsy and often asleep. This way the sedation dentist is able to go about his task without a frightened and panicking patient in his chair.
Sedation dentists are highly trained and the patient comes out of the sedation easily after the session though many continue feeling sleepy for some time after that. It is thus advisable to have some company to and from the dentist. A benefit of going to the sedation dentist is that the while the patient doesn't feel anything during the procedure, in all probability he will also not remember anything of the session either.
So no more cancelled appointments and lame excuses - sedation dentists are changing the way we look at dentistry and god oral hygiene!
